“…And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”

~ Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, Aphorism 146

this somnolent night

we sleep with doors open.

when the void stares back

we do not stir.

our body as solus.

our shadow – the empire.

our hearts – the color

of fire.

I wrote this on a quiet night of May 10, 2020 reflecting on the life of Ahmaud Arbery. I intended to hold it until I understood what it meant.

Two weeks later, George Floyd. I do not understand. And it cannot wait.
